Junior Leadership Training

Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader

  • What is it?
    • Unit level leadership training for all leadership positions held by Scouts.  The training is conducted by the Scoutmaster twice a year following elections in December and June of new patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders.
  • Who can attend?
    • This is required training for every Scout elected to a leadership position within the Troop.

Polaris

  • What is it?
    • Polaris is the Boy Scout National Youth Leadership Training Conference operated by the Cascade Pacific Council under the direction of the council Training Committee and the Program Department. It is an exciting, action based program designed to provide youth members of the B.S.A.with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.
  • Who can attend?
    • Only Scouts who are 13 - 15, First Class, and have not yet attended Sogus. They may have had some leadership experience or are potential leaders in your troop. They need to be individuals who are self-motivated, and live the Scout Oath and Law. 

Sogus

  • What is it?
    • The Junior Leader Training Conference is an eight day outdoor experience for Troop and Team youth leaders. It is conducted by the Council Leadership Training Committee based on an outline approved by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America. SOGUS uses high adventure activities as methods of instruction.
  • Who can attend?
    • Conference participants should be Varsity Team Leaders, Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader or a Scout likely to assume one of these positions soon. Because of the ruggedness and high adventure involved with SOGUS, the participants must be 14 years old (but under 18) or have completed the 8th grade by the time the course begins. He must be a First Class Scout and have camping , hiking and cooking skills
       

Adult Leadership Training

  • Fast Start
    • Fast Start is a video training for new Scout leader or parent. There is a separate video for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and for Venturing. Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be delivered immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member.video for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and for Venturing. 
  • Youth Protection
    • The Boy Scouts of America has adopted a number of policies aimed at eliminating opportunities for abuse within the Scouting program. These policies focus on leadership selection and on placing barriers to abuse within the program.  The Boy Scouts of America has developed an On-Line version of their Youth Protection Training course This will make it easier for volunteers to renew their certification every two years as is specified by the BSA. Please follow the link and remember to follow the directions to receive credit for your training.
  • New Leader Essentials
    • Basic information about Scouting in general and about the position for which a registered leader will be volunteering within their unit.
  • Boy Scout Leader Position Specific
    • Once a volunteer has a solid overview of the Boy Scouts of America's values-based program, they can begin training for their specific Scouting position through Leader Specific Training.  This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role.  Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies.  Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters must attend an Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills to complete their Leader Specific Training requirement
